6 Simple steps to prevent Dry Skin

Dry skin is something that plagues people of all ages, but especially children and the elderly. Dry skin isn't just uncomfortable; it can also be dangerous because of how it causes or exacerbates health issues.

Though dry skin may seem like a minor issue, it can actually be quite uncomfortable and even troublesome if not addressed properly. Here are six simple steps you can take to prevent dry skin and keep your skin looking and feeling its best!

How to prevent Dry Skin?

  1. Moisturize your dry skin at least once per day with a safe moisturizer. If you're going to be out in the dry air, apply it twice. Dry skin is usually not an issue for people who live in coastal areas or other water-rich climates, but frequent hand washing and excess contact with dry air from furnaces, space heaters, and fireplaces can cause dryness at any time of year. Dry skin moisturizers usually work best when they contain either glycerin or lanolin.
  2.  Limit water exposure Bathe and shower for no more than 10 minutes at a time. The setting should be set to warm, not hot. Bathe only once a day, if possible. Excessive sun exposure can also lead to dry skin. Sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection should be worn even when the weather isn't sunny out.
  3. Skip the drying soap Try cleansing creams, gentle skin cleansers and shower gels with added moisturizers. Work up a rich lather with your washcloth, then rinse. Dry skin is caused by exposure to dry air and chemicals that strip your skin of its natural oils. The more exposure you have, the drier your skin will get. Don't use soaps or other harsh chemicals on dry skin because it will only make things worse.
  4. Cover as much skin as possible in cold or windy weather Winter can be especially drying to the skin, so be sure to wear a scarf, hat, and gloves when you go out.
  5. Always wear sunscreen Sunburn is the number one cause of premature aging and wrinkles. Dry skin gets much worse when you're exposed to the sun for too long, so always use a sunscreen with at least an SPF30 rating and UVA/UVB protection.
  6. Wear rubber gloves. Gloves can help protect your skin if you must immerse your hands in water or are using abrasive cleansers.
